SKATE PROFILING
YORK REGION

Precision skate profiling is available in York Region on site at our Stouffville Clippers Sports Complex Location and drop off service is available from our Stouffville Arena, and Milliken Mills locations.

SKATE PROFILING

Dial in the geometry of your steel for the way you skate.

SINGLE

RADIUS

A traditional, predictable profile built around one radius.

DUAL

RADIUS

Two blended radii balance maneuverability, stability and glide.

ZUPERIOR

MULTI-RADIUS (3)

A multi-radius family designed to blend agility, speed and stability.

QUAD

FOUR-RADIUS

Four blended radii create a progressive profile from the front of the blade through the heel, giving skaters another way to tune agility, stability and glide.

ELLIPSE

CONTINUOUS CURVE

A continuously changing profile with no distinct radius transition points. Ellipse profiles are designed to create a smooth, natural-feeling progression from heel to toe while balancing stability, glide and maneuverability.

SPLIT

SPLIT PROFILE

Split profiles let us tune different areas of the blade for a specific skating feel. Options such as NA Split and SE Split can be selected according to the skater, steel and desired setup.

WHAT DOES SKATE PROFILING ACTUALLY CHANGE?

Skate profiling — also called skate blade profiling or contouring — changes the lengthwise shape of the steel. Sharpening works across the width of the blade to create two edges and a hollow; profiling works from heel to toe to establish the geometry you skate on.

That geometry influences how much steel contacts the ice, where the blade feels balanced beneath you and how easily the skate transitions through different parts of a stride or turn. A profile is not a shortcut to better skating, and there is no universal “best” profile. The goal is to create a repeatable setup that suits the skater and produces the feel they are looking for.

ICE CONTACT

Changing the blade geometry changes the amount and distribution of steel contacting the ice. In general, more contact can favour stability and glide, while less contact can make the skate feel more agile.

BALANCE + PITCH

Profiling can change where you feel centred over the blade. The profile and its pitch can move the skating feel forward, neutral or back depending on the setup selected.

REPEATABILITY

Once you find a setup you like, we can reproduce that profile on replacement or additional sets of compatible steel so your backup blades are built around the same geometry.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROFILE

We do not choose a profile from a position chart alone. Skate size, blade length, body size, skating style, current setup, position, experience and personal preference can all matter. Two players at the same position may prefer completely different profiles.

Before changing your steel, tell us what you like about your current skates and what you want to change. If you already have a profile that works, we can stay with it. If you are experimenting, we can help narrow the options without pretending there is one magic profile for everyone.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE NOW?

Your current setup is useful information. Stability, turning feel, acceleration, glide and where you feel balanced give us a starting point instead of changing things blindly.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE?

A profile should solve a specific preference or setup issue. We focus on the feel you want more of — or less of — rather than choosing a profile because it is popular.

CHANGE ONE THING AT A TIME

Profile, pitch and hollow can all affect feel. Keeping changes deliberate makes it easier to understand what actually worked and gives us a setup we can reproduce.

PROFILE + SHARPENING + STEEL

PROFILING VS. SHARPENING

Profiling establishes the heel-to-toe geometry. Sharpening creates and restores the skating edges. Your profile normally remains through many sharpenings, although steel wear and repeated sharpening can gradually alter the original geometry.

NEW + REPLACEMENT STEEL

New runners arrive with a factory geometry, but factory does not automatically mean ideal for every skater. Profiling new or replacement steel lets you start with a known setup rather than adapting to whatever shape arrived in the package.

MULTIPLE SETS

If you carry backup steel, profiling compatible sets to the same specification can reduce the change in feel when you swap runners. We recommend recording the profile and sharpening setup you prefer.

A PROFILE IS A SETUP — NOT A GUARANTEE

Profiling can change how your skates feel, but results are personal. Technique, equipment, ice conditions, sharpening hollow and individual preference all contribute to what you experience on the ice. Our job is to help you choose and reproduce a setup — not promise that a particular profile will make every skater faster or better.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS SKATE PROFILING?
Skate profiling changes the lengthwise geometry of the blade. It affects how much steel contacts the ice, where you feel balanced over the blade, and how the skate behaves through acceleration, turns, stops and glide.
IS PROFILING THE SAME AS SHARPENING?
No. Profiling changes the shape of the blade from toe to heel. Sharpening restores the edges and radius of hollow across the width of the blade. They work together, but they are different services.
WHICH PROFILE IS BEST FOR ME?
There is no single best profile for every skater. The right setup depends on your skating style, position, size, ability, current steel and what you want to feel more or less of on the ice.
DO I NEED TO REPROFILE EVERY TIME I SHARPEN?
No. Profiling is not an every-sharpen service. Normal sharpening maintains your edges. Over time, repeated sharpening and steel wear can gradually change the blade geometry, which is when reprofiling may make sense.
CAN YOU MATCH A SECOND SET OF STEEL?
Yes. Once you have a profile you like, matching additional or replacement steel is one of the best ways to keep the feel of your skates consistent.
DO NEW BLADES BENEFIT FROM PROFILING?
They can. New steel comes with a factory shape, but that does not mean it is the best profile for every skater. Profiling lets us tune the blade geometry to your preferences before your regular sharpening.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SINGLE, DUAL AND MULTI-RADIUS PROFILE?
A single-radius profile uses one radius through the profiled portion of the blade. Dual and multi-radius profiles combine different radii through the blade to create different characteristics from toe to heel. Ellipse profiles use a continuously changing curve rather than distinct radius transition points.
WHAT IS PITCH IN SKATE PROFILING?
Pitch describes where the profile places your balance relative to the blade. Adjusting pitch can make a setup feel more forward, neutral or rearward. It should be selected deliberately because even a good profile can feel very different when the balance point changes.
WHAT ARE ELLIPSE PROFILES?
Ellipse profiles use a continuously changing curve rather than several distinct radii joined together. The result is intended to create a smooth progression through the blade. As with any profile, the appropriate size and setup depend on the skater and steel.
WHAT ARE SPLIT PROFILES?
Split profiles are another way of controlling the geometry of different areas of the blade. We offer options including NA Split and SE Split. Which one makes sense depends on the runner, the skater and the feel being targeted.
CAN PROFILING CHANGE MY SHARPENING HOLLOW?
Profiling and hollow are separate settings, but they interact in how the skate feels. After changing a profile, some skaters choose to reassess their hollow. We recommend making deliberate changes and keeping a record of the combination you prefer.

Testimonials

“We put a Quad profile on my son’s new steel and he noticed it right away. Better stability and he said he could really feel the difference when accelerating and changing direction.”

Jason T.

“I knew nothing about skate profiling before coming to Cutting Edge. They explained how it worked and recommended a profile for my son based on how he skates. He’s been really happy with the result.”

Karen S.

“Really impressed with the skate profiling service. They didn’t just recommend a random profile — they asked about my skating style and explained the different options before doing anything.”

Brandon K.

My son had been struggling with a new pair of skates and kept saying they just didn’t feel right. We had them sharpened a few times, but he still didn’t feel as balanced or comfortable as he had on his old skates.

We brought them into Cutting Edge and they took a closer look at the blades. They showed us that the toe of the steel was actually about 1.5 mm higher than the heel. I never would have noticed something like that just looking at the skates, but once they measured it and showed us, you could clearly see the difference.

They explained how that could affect his balance and the way he was positioned over his skates. They were able to correct the blades through profiling and get everything properly balanced.

The improvement was immediate. After his first skate, he said they finally felt right. He felt more balanced, more comfortable in his stride and much more confident on his edges.

I really appreciated that they took the time to actually figure out what was wrong instead of just sharpening the skates again. My son knew something felt off, and it turned out he was right. Cutting Edge found the problem, showed it to us and fixed it.
